Washington, DC. BACKGROUND: Officials of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 689 demonstrate a new plastic shield that Metro is testing to better protect Metrobus operators. Assaults of operators have more than doubled in the past five years. Of the incidents last year, 56 occurred in the District, 21 in Maryland and seven in Virginia. Monique Street, Metrobus opeator demonstrates the shield today. Since assaults on Metrobus operators have increased, a protective shield is being tested in this week on six buses. Riders have spat on, punched, slapped and thrown bricks among other assaults on bus operators.
