SLUG: nigeria INPUTDATE: 2009-07-03 14:23:43.827 CREDIT: Karin Brulliard/STAFF/TWP kano, , nigeria As military rule ended in Nigeria a decade ago, a wave of popular support swept an Islamic legal system into place in this nation's desperately poor and mostly Muslim northern states. It has turned out in a way few expected. The utopia envisioned by backers of sharia law, who believed politicians' promises of a morals-based antidote to corruption and misery after decades of pillaging by civilian and military rulers. The people are still poor, residents here complain, and politicians are still rich.
