Because of rising demand for coal, a giant strip mine nearby is planning major expansions over the next decade, which could result in the demolition of several villages and the relocation of as many as 4,000 people. Many of the villagers are Sorbs, a Slavic-speaking ethnic group that has lived in the region for centuries. Penk is pictured inside a Sorb community center and museum in the village of Rohne.
