Slug: ME/ANIMALS Date: 5/22/2003 Photographer: Frank Johnston/TWP Neg# 142490 College Park, MD, University of Maryland campus farm An animal-rights organization at U-Md. is calling for an end to one of the most popular classes on campus -- Animal Science 399, also known as "Lamb Watch" -- saying that the university should not allow the lambs to be castrated or tail-docked or sold at auction. Their protest marks a new and somewhat surprising angle for the animals-rights movement -- protesting farming practices that have been standard for generations instead of the usual focus on the use of animals in cutting-edge university research. Katie Johnson, left, a student and senior at U.of MD., along with Jordan Thomas, right, Farm Manager at the University, feed the sheep as part of "Animal Science 399," also know as "Lamb Watch."
